Think in Terms of Long-Term Happiness

A lot of people confuse bursts of short-term excitement or elation with a long-term pattern of authentic happiness. There are many things that will make you happy for a short while but what will bring you joy in the long-term is the deeper more meaningful things in life like loving yourself, meaningful relationships or a fulfilling career; behaviors that require a lifelong commitment.

Lighten Up

Not everything in life is a matter of life or death. If you live that way, you'll always be on heightened alert and it will take a toll on how happy you feel. Try looking at the lighter side of life as often as possible: Laugh about things, say silly stuff, smile often, hang out with fun friends or tell some jokes. You'll be glad you did because life won't feel as serious or heavy.

Each Day is a New Day

No matter how yesterday went, or the previous part of your life, each new day offers the opportunity to move in any direction you wish. Wake up and take advantage of this wonderful chance to do whatever you want. You can follow your passions and start living a happy life whenever you decide you want to do it.

Live Mindfully

When you live mindfully you move from thinking and doing things unconsciously to behaving carefully and deliberately. Most people cope with the events and people in their lives by reacting the way they always have rather than by doing some planning beforehand. The key to being truly happy in life is to take that extra moment before you act to rethink what you're doing and move in a positive direction.

Happiness Is… How You Choose to Live Your Life

Happiness is...

  • Resolving the challenging issues in your life.
  • Healing your hurts.
  • Discovering who you really are.
  • Taking action each day to live life as the real you.
  • Doing things that you find meaningful.
  • Following your own path.
  • Making the world a better place for you and as many other people as possible.
  • Not settling for superficial or temporary happiness.
  • Knowing deep down inside that you really are happy.

When people ask me for ideas on how to be happy I talk about things like the items in this list because happiness is about how a person chooses to live. You get to decide what kind of person you are and whether your life follows a direct path toward joy and fulfillment.

Be Happy by Being Proactive

You can be happy by being proactive. When you're trying to achieve a goal it's important to think before you act. Do some planning beforehand. Weigh the pros and cons and move forward in an informed way. This doesn't mean that you think yourself into a corner and don't do anything, just make sure you think carefully about the steps you take. Here are a few tips on how to be more proactive:

  • Think of what really makes you happy.
  • Decide on one thing you will do today to make your happiness come true.
  • Take action.
  • Praise yourself for what you do.
  • Repeat the process.

When you decide to actually take action instead of waiting for things to happen to you, you'll get closer to being happy. What do you do to be more proactive?
